This engraving by Johann Georg Wille depicts the final moments of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. The composition is based on an original painting by the Dutch artist Frans van Mieris the Elder, which Wille translated into the medium of printmaking with technical precision. The scene captures the queen in a state of physical collapse, her gaze directed upwards as she holds the asp to her breast. Beside her, a grieving attendant covers her face, providing a contrast to the queen's dramatic posture.

Wille was a master of the burin, and this work demonstrates his ability to render varied textures through line work alone. The sheen of the silk drapery, the weight of the heavy curtains, and the carved details of the chair are articulated through a system of cross-hatching and fine parallel lines. The lower margin of the print features an elaborate cartouche supported by putti, which displays the coat of arms of the Comte de Vence, the owner of the original painting at the time.

As a German engraver who spent the majority of his career in Paris, Wille occupied a position of authority within the eighteenth-century print market.
