The narrative concerns the illicit lovers Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta, who are discovered and murdered by Francesca's husband, Gianciotto Malatesta.

Cabanel focuses on the immediate aftermath of the violence. The composition is structured around the contrast between the stillness of the deceased lovers and the looming, shadowed figure of the assassin in the background. Francesca lies across a bed, her body draped in a luminous gold gown, while Paolo has fallen to the floor.
