Description
A stark, evocative maritime scene by the self-taught Cornish artist Alfred Wallis, rendered in his signature naïve style on cardboard.
Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties following the death of his wife. He worked primarily on scavenged materials, such as cardboard boxes and scraps of wood, using limited palettes of ship paint. His approach to composition ignores traditional perspective, favouring a flattened, map-like view that prioritises the memory of the subject over optical accuracy.
In Death Ship, the vessel occupies the centre of the frame, rendered in stark black against a muted, brown background. The sea is depicted through thick, gestural strokes of white paint, creating a sense of movement that contrasts with the static, profile view of the steamer. Wallis often painted from memory, drawing upon his years spent at sea to capture the essence of maritime life. His work gained attention from members of the St Ives group, including Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, who admired his lack of formal training and his direct, unmediated expression.
This piece displays the characteristic economy of means found in Wallis's output. The cardboard support remains visible in areas, integrating the texture of the material into the final image. The smoke trailing from the funnels provides a sense of direction and momentum, while the simplified forms of the hull and superstructure reduce the subject to its most essential components. By eschewing the conventions of academic art, Wallis produced images that possess a raw, immediate quality. His work remains a distinct example of twentieth-century British folk art, documenting the vanishing era of sail and steam through the eyes of a man who lived the life he depicted.
