Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, produced this work in 1512. The composition depicts the body of Christ being prepared for the tomb, a subject common in religious art of the period. Lotto arranges the figures in a tight, emotive group around the central form of Christ, who is supported by attendants. The scene is set against a landscape that recedes into the distance, where the three crosses of Calvary are visible on a hill.

The painting demonstrates the artist's interest in psychological expression and dramatic lighting. The figures exhibit varied emotional states, from the grief of the women to the focused labour of the men handling the shroud. Above the group, putti occupy the clouds, surrounding a radiant IHS monogram, which provides a celestial counterpoint to the earthly sorrow below. The foreground includes specific symbols of the Passion, such as the crown of thorns and the hammer, which ground the narrative in the physical reality of the event.

Lotto was known for his individualistic approach, often diverging from the more classical norms of his contemporaries. This work reflects his ability to combine precise detail with a sense of movement. The use of colour, particularly the deep reds and earthy tones, helps to define the spatial relationships between the figures. The arched top of the panel suggests its original purpose as an altarpiece, designed to draw the viewer's eye upward toward the divine symbols in the sky. Through this arrangement, Lotto balances the heavy, tactile nature of the burial scene with the ethereal quality of the heavenly realm.
