A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 'Desire' captures a moment of quiet contemplation. The subject's pose and expression convey a sense of longing or anticipation.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a prominent Japanese printmaker of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. He is widely recognised as one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings. Yoshitoshi's work is noted for its depictions of historical events, folklore, and ghost stories, often rendered with dramatic intensity and emotional depth. His innovative approach revitalised the traditional ukiyo-e style, incorporating elements of Western art while maintaining its distinctive Japanese character. 'Desire' exemplifies Yoshitoshi's skill in portraying human emotion through subtle gestures and expressions. The print features a woman in a turquoise kimono, her hands raised as if in contemplation or anticipation. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figure positioned against a muted background that accentuates her presence. The colour palette is restrained, with the cool blues and greens contrasting with the red accents of her garment. The print showcases the artist's mastery of line and form, capturing the delicate nuances of the subject's pose and facial features.
