Arkhip Kuindzhi, a master of light and atmospheric effects within the Russian Realist tradition, painted Dnieper in the Morning in 1881. This work captures the vast, quiet expanse of the Dnieper River at dawn. The composition is dominated by a low horizon line, which allows the sky to occupy the majority of the canvas. This choice emphasises the immense scale of the Russian steppe and the river that cuts through it.

The foreground features a detailed rendering of grasses and wildflowers, painted with a delicate touch that contrasts with the broader, more ethereal treatment of the water and sky. Kuindzhi employs a muted, cool palette of greys, soft blues, and pale greens to convey the stillness of the early morning air.
