This work represents the outer shutters of a triptych, featuring a donor in prayer alongside St. John the Baptist. Jan van Eyck employs the technique of grisaille for the figure of the saint, rendering him as a stone sculpture within a shallow architectural niche. This stylistic choice creates a visual contrast with the donor, who is depicted in full colour, wearing a heavy red robe trimmed with fur. The juxtaposition between the living human and the simulated statue demonstrates the technical mastery of the Northern Renaissance.
