Description
A nineteenth-century Dutch pastoral study featuring three cows in a meadow, rendered in ink and wash by Johan Daniël Koelman.
Johan Daniël Koelman, a Dutch painter active during the nineteenth century, produced this study of cattle in a low-lying meadow. The work displays the characteristic interest in rural life and atmospheric conditions common to the Dutch Romantic tradition. Koelman focuses on the quiet observation of livestock, capturing three cows near a water trough in an expansive, flat field.
The composition relies on the contrast between the solid forms of the animals and the soft, layered wash used to render the sky. The artist employs ink wash to create depth, allowing the light to filter through the clouds and reflect upon the wet ground. The foreground is rendered with precise pen strokes, defining the texture of the grass and the physical presence of the cattle, while the background dissolves into a hazy horizon. A small boat visible in the distance suggests the proximity of a waterway, a common feature of the Dutch countryside.
Koelman demonstrates a technical proficiency in handling ink and wash, using varying densities of pigment to suggest volume and distance. The cows are depicted in naturalistic poses: two stand near a trough, while the third rests on the ground. This arrangement provides a sense of stillness and calm. The work avoids unnecessary detail, preferring to capture the mood of a typical day in the Netherlands. The signature, located in the lower right corner, confirms the artist's hand. This print offers a view into the nineteenth-century fascination with the rural environment, presented through a monochromatic lens that emphasises form and light over colour.
