Egret on Tree Stump - Shibata Zeshin

Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerware and painting, known for his ability to synthesise traditional Japanese techniques with a minimalist aesthetic. This work, executed in the format of a fan painting, demonstrates his command of ink wash and negative space. The subject is a solitary egret perched upon a weathered tree stump, rendered with economy of line and subtle tonal variation.

Zeshin often utilised the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on birds and flowers, to explore themes of transience and natural beauty. The composition is asymmetrical, a hallmark of his style, which draws the eye across the expanse of the paper. The background features a gold-flecked border, providing a decorative frame that contrasts with the muted, organic tones of the central subject. His brushwork is precise, capturing the texture of the wood and the soft plumage of the bird through varied pressure and ink density.

This piece reflects the artist's training under the Shijo school, which emphasised direct observation of nature.
