Envy (Invidia) - Giotto di Bondone

This work is a detail from the lower register of the north wall in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. It depicts the personification of Envy, one of the Seven Vices painted in monochrome grisaille to resemble marble sculpture. The figure is shown in profile, standing within a niche, with flames rising around the feet to signify the internal torment associated with the sin.

The iconography is specific and deliberate. A serpent emerges from the mouth of the figure, curling back towards its own eyes, which are covered by a hood. This visual metaphor suggests that envy blinds the individual to reality and consumes the self from within. The figure holds a money bag, linking the vice to material greed and the desire for the possessions of others. The inscription 'INVIDIA' appears clearly at the top of the frame.

Giotto employs a sculptural approach to the human form, using light and shadow to create a sense of volume and weight. Despite the limited colour palette, the figure possesses a tangible presence. The drapery of the robe is rendered with careful attention to gravity and fold, demonstrating the artist's departure from the flatter, more stylised Byzantine traditions that preceded his work. The monochrome treatment allows the viewer to focus on the psychological state of the figure rather than decorative detail. This series of Vices, paired with the Virtues on the opposite wall, provides a moral framework for the chapel's narrative programme. The work remains a primary example of the transition toward naturalism in Western art, where human emotion and character are given physical form through precise anatomical observation and symbolic gesture.
