Eugene von Guerard, an Austrian-born painter who arrived in Australia during the gold rush, produced this work in 1857. It depicts a specific location in the Dandenong Ranges, near Melbourne. The composition employs a framing device, using overhanging branches in the foreground to draw the viewer into the dense, temperate rainforest.

Von Guerard was trained in the Düsseldorf school, which emphasised precise observation and technical control. This background is evident in his treatment of the Australian flora.
