Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, created this depiction of a fox using his characteristic method of painting on black oilcloth. Its body is elongated, and its expression is captured through minimal, deliberate brushwork.

Pirosmani often painted on oilcloth, a common material in the taverns and shops of Tiflis where he worked. His subjects frequently included animals, both domestic and wild, which he observed with a keen, detached eye. The fox is shown in profile, moving across a muted, ochre-toned ground that suggests a simple earth surface. The artist uses a limited palette, focusing on the russet tones of the fox against the deep black of the background.
