This engraving by Jan Harmensz. Muller depicts the climactic moment from Homer's Odyssey, where Odysseus, disguised as a beggar, defeats the rival beggar Irus. The composition is characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style, prioritising exaggerated muscularity and dynamic, contorted poses over classical restraint. The central figure of Odysseus is rendered with a focus on anatomical detail, his back turned to the viewer to emphasise the tension in his physique.

Surrounding the combatants is a crowd of onlookers, their faces and postures conveying a mixture of shock and curiosity. Muller employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching to create depth and volume, particularly in the shadows cast by the figures and the architectural elements in the background. The scene is set within a classical portico, providing a structured environment for the chaotic action. The inclusion of a small child in the foreground adds a sense of scale and human vulnerability to the otherwise heroic struggle.

As a printmaker, Muller was known for his technical precision and his ability to translate the complex compositions of painters like Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem into the medium of engraving.
