This etching by Hieronymus Cock depicts the Roman Forum as it appeared during the sixteenth century. Cock, a Flemish publisher and printmaker based in Antwerp, played a role in disseminating images of classical antiquity to Northern Europe. His work often captured the tension between the grandeur of ancient ruins and the contemporary state of the site, which was then known as the Campo Vaccino.

The composition organises the space through a series of architectural layers. On the left, the Arch of Septimius Severus stands as a solid, recognisable form, while the right side features the columns of the Temple of Saturn. The middle ground contains smaller, less defined structures, suggesting the accumulation of medieval and Renaissance building over the ancient foundations. Cock employs a precise, linear technique to define the textures of weathered stone and the crumbling edges of the ruins. The sky is filled with swirling, schematic clouds, a common stylistic device in prints of this period to balance the heavy geometry of the architecture.

In the foreground, small figures are depicted resting among the debris. These figures provide a sense of scale, contrasting the human presence with the monumental remains of the Roman Empire. The Latin inscription in the upper right corner, 'Ex variis, apud Capitolium ruinis, prospectus unus', indicates that this view is a composite or a specific perspective taken from the Capitoline Hill.
