Jean-Jacques de Boissieu was a French artist from Lyon, recognised primarily for his mastery of etching. This work, dated 1763, demonstrates his technical precision and his interest in the rural environment. The composition features two figures with a goat positioned on the bank of a river, set against a backdrop of rugged cliffs and a distant structure.

Boissieu utilised a fine, controlled line to define the textures of the gnarled tree on the left and the rocky terrain on the right. His approach to light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground figures toward the horizon.
