Description
A detailed reproduction of the central panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, featuring the enthroned figure of God the Father by Jan van Eyck.
This image depicts the central figure of God the Father, a panel from the larger Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. Completed in 1432, this work is a primary example of Early Netherlandish painting. Jan van Eyck, alongside his brother Hubert, utilised oil paint to achieve a level of detail and luminosity previously unseen in European art.
God the Father is shown enthroned, wearing a triple tiara and holding a crystal sceptre. His red robes are rendered with extreme precision, showing the weight and texture of heavy fabric, adorned with pearls and precious stones. The figure is flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, who are depicted in prayer. The background features a golden arch, inscribed with Latin text, which adds to the sense of divine authority and spatial depth.
Below the main figures, the panel includes a representation of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. This scene shows a vast gathering of figures in a green meadow, surrounding an altar where the lamb stands. The composition demonstrates the mastery of perspective and light that defines the work of the Van Eyck brothers. The attention to naturalistic detail, from the individual blades of grass to the intricate embroidery on the vestments, reflects the technical rigour of the period. This print captures the clarity of the original oil technique, allowing for a close examination of the textures and the subtle play of light across the surfaces. The work remains a significant reference point for the development of oil painting in the fifteenth century.
