Theodore Clement Steele, a central figure in the Hoosier Group, produced this work during his later years in Brown County, Indiana. The painting captures a specific topographical feature known as Gordon Hill, rendered with the characteristic light-sensitive brushwork of the American Impressionist movement. Steele moved to this rural region in 1907, seeking to document the changing seasons and the specific quality of light found in the Midwest.

The composition is anchored by a central body of water, which acts as a mirror for the sky and the surrounding foliage. Steele employs a palette dominated by golden yellows, ochres, and varied greens, reflecting the warmth of the sun upon the grassy slopes. The brushwork is loose and gestural, prioritising the capture of atmospheric conditions over rigid structural detail.
