Description
A minimalist screenprint by British artist Terry Frost, featuring a balanced arrangement of geometric forms and bold colours.
Terry Frost, a central figure in the St Ives School, produced work defined by a reduction of form and a focus on the interplay of colour and geometry. Green and Orange is a screenprint that demonstrates his interest in the structural potential of simple shapes. The composition is anchored by a vertical lime-green rectangle, which acts as a central axis for the surrounding elements.
Frost employs a limited palette of black, red, and green to create a sense of balance. The curved lines, reminiscent of his interest in the Cornish coastline and the movement of boats, contrast with the rigid verticality of the central block. The horizontal black line at the base provides a grounding element, while the red arcs suggest a rhythmic, almost musical quality.
His approach to printmaking allowed for flat, saturated areas of colour that emphasise the graphic nature of his vision. By stripping away representational detail, Frost invites the viewer to engage with the physical presence of the ink on the paper. The work avoids unnecessary complexity, relying instead on the tension between the organic curves and the geometric block. This print is characteristic of his later period, where his visual language became increasingly distilled. The negative space surrounding the forms is as active as the shapes themselves, creating a dialogue between the printed image and the white paper surface. Frost's work remains a clear example of British abstraction, prioritising clarity of form and the emotional resonance of colour.
