Robert Spencer, a member of the New Hope School of Pennsylvania Impressionism, produced this work during a period when he focused on the industrial architecture of the Delaware River valley. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured idyllic rural scenes, Spencer turned his attention to the utilitarian structures of local mills and tenements.

In this composition, the weathered brickwork of the mill dominates the frame. The artist employs a muted palette of ochre, grey, and earthy browns to capture the texture of aged masonry and the sombre atmosphere of the industrial site.
