Maxime Maufra, a painter associated with the Pont-Aven School, frequently turned his attention to the rugged coastline of Brittany. This work depicts the traditional collection of goemon, or seaweed, a practice that was essential to the local economy of the region. The composition focuses on the interplay between the dramatic, weathered rock formations and the sandy shore where the harvest is gathered.

Maufra employs a technique that balances observation with a subjective response to the environment. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the texture of the seaweed piles and the solidity of the cliffs.
