This work by Petrus Christus, an active figure in the Early Netherlandish tradition, presents a devotional image of the suffering Christ. Christus employs a precise technique, characteristic of the Bruges school, to render the textures of the skin, the individual hairs of the beard, and the sharp thorns of the crown. The crown of thorns is depicted with careful attention to its physical form, with small droplets of blood marking the brow and neck, intended to evoke a sense of quiet contemplation in the viewer. Behind the head, delicate gold-leaf motifs are applied directly to the dark ground.
