Description

A dramatic Baroque etching by Johann Wilhelm Baur depicting the vengeful Hecuba from Ovid's Metamorphoses.

This etching by Johann Wilhelm Baur depicts a dramatic sequence from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The composition captures the violent retribution of Hecuba, the former Queen of Troy, against the Thracian King Polymestor. Following the murder of her son Polydorus, Hecuba exacts her revenge by blinding the king, an act rendered here with dynamic energy and characteristic Baroque movement. To the left, the narrative continues as Hecuba undergoes her final transformation into a dog, a fate brought about by her overwhelming grief and rage.

Baur, a German artist who spent significant time in Italy, demonstrates a mastery of the etching medium. His lines are precise, creating a sense of depth across the coastal setting. The sky is filled with billowing clouds, which frame the mythological transition occurring in the upper left. The figures are rendered with expressive gestures, typical of the period's interest in theatrical storytelling. The contrast between the foreground action and the distant, calm harbour creates a tension that draws the viewer into the scene.

This work is part of a larger series illustrating Ovid's tales, a popular subject for artists of the seventeenth century. Baur's ability to condense complex narrative arcs into a single frame is evident here. The etching provides a clear view of the artist's technical skill, particularly in the handling of light and shadow through varied hatching techniques. It is a fine example of the period's fascination with classical literature and the dramatic potential of the human form in motion. The print offers a glimpse into the way seventeenth-century audiences engaged with ancient myths, blending moral instruction with visual spectacle.
