Description
A traditional Japanese ink wash painting by Watanabe Kazan, depicting a lively horse market within a mountainous setting, executed in the Bunjinga style.
This hanging scroll, executed in ink and light colour on silk, represents a dialogue between two significant figures in Japanese art history. Watanabe Kazan, a scholar-painter and official of the Tahara domain, produced this work as a tribute to the earlier master Ike no Taiga. The composition adopts the Bunjinga, or literati, style, which prioritises the expressive brushwork and intellectual engagement of the artist over strict realism.
The scene depicts a bustling horse market situated within a mountainous terrain. The upper section of the scroll features a calligraphic inscription, a common element in literati works that integrates text with the visual narrative. Below, the artist employs varied ink washes to define the craggy peaks and the dense foliage of the trees. The lower portion of the painting is densely populated with figures and horses, rendered with quick, rhythmic strokes that suggest movement and the chaotic energy of a market day.
Kazan was known for his interest in Western techniques, particularly in his portraiture, yet this work remains firmly within the tradition of Chinese-influenced Japanese ink painting. The use of space is characteristic of the period, with the mountain forms providing a vertical structure that contrasts with the horizontal activity of the market below. The palette is restrained, relying on subtle tonal shifts in ink to create depth and atmosphere. This piece demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency and his respect for the lineage of the Nanga school. It serves as a study of both human activity and the natural environment, balanced through the traditional medium of ink on silk.
