Robert Henri, a central figure in the American realist movement, produced this work during his travels in the American Southwest. The painting captures a pueblo settlement with a direct, gestural application of paint. Henri prioritised the immediate sensory experience of the scene over precise topographical accuracy, utilising a palette dominated by ochre, sun-baked yellows, and deep, earthy greens.

The composition is structured around the horizontal mass of the adobe structures, which blend into the surrounding terrain. Henri employs loose, rapid brushwork to define the forms of the buildings and the foliage in the foreground. This technique conveys the heat and light of the region, reflecting his interest in capturing the spirit of a place through colour and movement rather than rigid detail.
