Description
A monochrome fresco depicting the personification of Infidelity, part of the iconic Scrovegni Chapel cycle by Giotto.
This work is a monochrome fresco representing the personification of Infidelity, or 'Infidelitas'. It forms part of the extensive decorative cycle within the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. Giotto executed this series between 1303 and 1305, commissioned by Enrico Scrovegni to adorn the interior walls of the family chapel.
The figure is rendered in grisaille, a technique designed to mimic the appearance of stone sculpture. This stylistic choice creates a sense of physical presence and weight, characteristic of Giotto's approach to human form. The figure wears a helmet and holds a small idol in her hand, which is tethered to her neck by a rope. This iconography serves to identify the subject as one who has turned away from the Christian faith toward pagan worship. Above the figure, a small, partial representation of a deity or celestial being appears, adding a narrative layer to the composition.
The composition is contained within a rectangular frame, typical of the lower register of the chapel walls where the Vices and Virtues are positioned. The use of light and shadow defines the folds of the drapery, providing a sense of volume that was innovative for the early fourteenth century. The background is dark and textured, contrasting with the lighter tones of the figure. This work demonstrates the artist's focus on human emotion and physical reality, moving away from the flatter, more stylised traditions of the Byzantine period. The clarity of the figure and the directness of the allegorical message remain clear, even centuries after the original application of the pigment to the plaster wall.
