Vasily Vereshchagin, a Russian painter known for his unflinching documentation of military campaigns and ethnographic studies, produced this work during his time in Turkestan. The drawing captures a quiet, observational moment at a roadside inn near Tashkent. Vereshchagin travelled extensively through Central Asia, often recording the daily lives of local populations with a focus on architectural forms and the harsh environmental conditions of the region.

The composition is defined by a stark, monochromatic palette. The low-slung, mud-brick structure of the inn dominates the frame, its roof covered in a layer of snow that suggests the biting cold of a Central Asian winter.
