Description
A fine wood engraving by Timothy Cole, depicting Jacqueline van Caestre after Anthony van Dyck, executed in 1895.
This wood engraving by Timothy Cole depicts Jacqueline van Caestre, a subject originally captured in oil by the Flemish master Anthony van Dyck. Cole, an American engraver known for his technical precision, produced this work in Brussels in February 1895. His practice involved translating the tonal qualities of Old Master paintings into the linear language of wood engraving, a process that required immense control over the burin.
The portrait presents the sitter in a three-quarter view, wearing the elaborate costume typical of the early seventeenth-century Flemish aristocracy. Her attire includes a high, stiffened lace ruff, a bodice adorned with decorative embroidery, and a layered necklace. Cole uses a variety of line weights and cross-hatching techniques to differentiate the textures of the lace, the fabric of the sleeves, and the soft contours of the sitter's face. The background remains dark, which pushes the figure forward and focuses attention on the sitter's direct gaze.
Cole was commissioned by The Century Magazine to create a series of engravings based on European masterpieces. This specific print demonstrates his ability to replicate the chiaroscuro effects found in the original painting through the mechanical constraints of woodblock printing. The fine lines of the engraving capture the delicate lace patterns and the subtle shadows across the sitter's features, providing a faithful interpretation of the original composition. The print is signed in the plate by the artist, indicating his personal oversight of the production process. This work remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by late nineteenth-century reproductive engravers who sought to bring the visual experience of European galleries to a wider public audience through the medium of print.
