This etching, titled Januarius, is part of a series depicting the months of the year. Simon Frisius, a Dutch printmaker known for his technical precision, executed this work after a design by Antonio Tempesta. The composition follows the tradition of seasonal allegories, where the activities of the month are set against a backdrop that blends classical architecture with northern European winter conditions.

In the foreground, figures gather around a fire, a common motif for January, representing the need for warmth during the coldest month. The scene is populated with architectural elements, including a central rotunda that recalls Italian Renaissance structures, suggesting a synthesis of Mediterranean influence and the Dutch interest in topographical and imaginary views. Above, the figure of Aquarius pours water from two vessels, providing the astrological context for the month. The etching technique allows for a variety of textures, from the rough, hatched surfaces of the rocky terrain to the delicate lines defining the distant bridge and city structures.

Frisius was instrumental in the development of etching as a medium in the Netherlands, often collaborating with publishers such as Hendrick Hondius, whose name appears on the plate. The work demonstrates the period's fascination with the interplay between human activity and the natural cycle. The inclusion of classical ruins alongside contemporary figures creates a sense of timelessness, typical of the Mannerist and early Baroque sensibilities prevalent in the early 17th century.
