Description
A bold screenprint by Patrick Heron, featuring his signature use of saturated, hard-edged organic forms and intense colour relationships.
Patrick Heron was a central figure in the development of British abstraction, particularly through his association with the St Ives School in Cornwall. His work from the 1970s is defined by a rigorous exploration of colour and the interaction of flat, organic shapes. January 1973: 1 is a screenprint that demonstrates his interest in how distinct hues can create a sense of space without relying on traditional perspective.
The composition is dominated by a large, central field of red, which is interrupted by irregular, amoebic forms in green and magenta. Heron often spoke of colour as the primary subject of his painting, arguing that it possesses an inherent energy capable of activating the surface of the canvas or paper. By placing these saturated colours side by side, he forces the viewer to perceive depth through the optical vibration occurring at the edges where the shapes meet.
Unlike the gestural brushwork of American Abstract Expressionists, Heron preferred clean, hard-edged boundaries. This approach allows the viewer to focus entirely on the chromatic relationships. The green elements, positioned primarily along the left margin, act as a counterpoint to the magenta form on the right, creating a tension that pulls the eye across the central red expanse. This print reflects Heron's mature style, where he moved away from representational imagery to focus on the pure mechanics of vision. The work is a clear example of his ability to balance complex colour theory with a seemingly spontaneous arrangement of forms, resulting in a visual experience that is both immediate and carefully considered.
