This engraving, titled Ianvarius, forms part of a series depicting the months of the year. Aegidius Sadeler II, a highly skilled printmaker of the Flemish school, produced this work during his time in Prague, where he served the imperial court. The composition draws upon the tradition of the Labours of the Months, a theme common in medieval and Renaissance art, which links human activity to the seasonal cycle.

The foreground features figures engaged in winter tasks, primarily the felling and processing of timber. A man works with a saw at the base of a large tree, while others manage carts and horses. The bare, skeletal branches of the trees dominate the upper portion of the print, creating a dense network of lines that frame the scene. In the middle distance, a village unfolds, complete with a church and a windmill on a distant hill. Small figures populate the frozen ground, suggesting a community life that continues despite the harsh conditions of the season.

Sadeler employs a sophisticated use of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture. The contrast between the dark, gnarled bark of the foreground trees and the lighter, atmospheric treatment of the distant village demonstrates his technical control.
