Robert Henri, a central figure of the Ashcan School, painted this portrait in 1914 during one of his visits to the American Southwest. Henri travelled frequently to places such as Santa Fe, where he sought out subjects he found authentic and unpretentious. His approach to portraiture prioritised the immediate, human connection between the artist and the sitter, often favouring rapid, confident brushwork over academic finish.

In this work, the young boy is depicted with a direct gaze, his expression calm and composed. Henri employs a loose, painterly technique, visible in the energetic application of paint on the boy's white shirt and the blue garment layered over it. The background is kept dark and indistinct, which pushes the figure forward and ensures the viewer focuses entirely on the boy's face. The straw hat provides a warm, neutral tone that balances the cooler blues of the clothing.

Henri was known for his interest in the character of his subjects, often choosing individuals from diverse backgrounds to capture a sense of individual dignity. He avoided the sentimental tropes common in portraiture of the era, preferring to record the specific features and personality of the person before him.
