Bonasone, a Bolognese painter and engraver, was active during the mid-sixteenth century and is recognised for his technical precision in copperplate engraving. The central composition shows Juno seated with a child, while Mars stands to the right, holding a spear. The figures are rendered with the classical proportions typical of the period, reflecting the influence of contemporary Roman art.

The work is notable for its elaborate framing, which includes grotesque masks, swags of fruit, and flanking animal figures.
