John Hoppner, a contemporary of Sir Thomas Lawrence and a portraitist to the Prince of Wales, occasionally turned his attention to mythological subjects. This work depicts the classical narrative of Jupiter, who transformed himself into a cloud to conceal his presence from his wife, Juno, while approaching the nymph Io. Hoppner employs a dramatic chiaroscuro, where the figure of Io is illuminated by a soft, ethereal light, contrasting with the dark, swirling vapours that represent the god.

The composition focuses on the reaction of Io, whose posture conveys a mixture of surprise and surrender.
