A 1899 calendar design by Dutch artist Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, featuring stylised botanical motifs and Art Nouveau graphic elements.
This 1899 calendar design by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet reflects the distinct aesthetic of the Dutch Art Nouveau movement. Lion Cachet, a versatile designer and craftsman, applied his expertise in woodblock printing to create this functional yet highly decorative piece for the Mouton & Co. firm. The composition is framed by vertical borders featuring stylised botanical motifs, which echo the organic forms popularised by the period. The central area is divided into a grid for the twelve months, separated by columns that incorporate geometric lettering. The upper section features a decorative arch containing the company name and date, rendered with a rhythmic, flowing line quality that is characteristic of the artist's graphic work. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of blue, sage green, and soft red to define the shapes against the natural paper ground. Lion Cachet was known for his interest in the unity of design and material. His approach to this calendar demonstrates a clear understanding of the woodcut medium, where the texture of the block and the registration of the colours contribute to the final visual effect. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, instead favouring a balanced arrangement that integrates typography with illustrative elements. This piece provides a view into the commercial graphic design practices of the late nineteenth century, where even utilitarian items were treated as opportunities for artistic expression. The repetition of the floral elements in the side panels creates a sense of order, while the hand-drawn quality of the lettering adds a personal touch to the printed format.
