Description
A striking portrait of the Georgian monarch by the self-taught artist Niko Pirosmani, rendered in his signature flat, graphic style on oilcloth.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, produced this portrait of King Erekle II using his characteristic medium of oil paint on black oilcloth. The work displays the flattened perspective and direct, unadorned approach that defines his body of work. Pirosmani often painted on the very material used for table coverings in the taverns of Tiflis, leaving parts of the dark background exposed to create depth and contrast.
King Erekle II is depicted in a formal, regal posture, wearing a tall hat and a military-style uniform adorned with a prominent star-shaped order. The figure is framed against a bold, flat orange background, which serves to push the subject forward. The facial features are rendered with simplified, heavy lines, focusing on the eyes and the dark, dense beard. The blue sash and white cloak provide a clear colour hierarchy, guiding the viewer across the composition.
Pirosmani worked outside the formal art institutions of his time. His style relies on a limited palette and a rejection of academic modelling. This portrait captures the historical figure of the Georgian monarch through the lens of folk tradition, prioritising symbolic representation over anatomical precision. The result is a direct, graphic image that communicates the status and authority of the subject through colour and form alone. The paint application is economical, with little blending, which allows the texture of the oilcloth to remain visible in certain areas. This piece remains a representative example of how Pirosmani translated historical and cultural subjects into his own visual language, stripped of unnecessary detail and focused on the essential character of the sitter.
