Emily Carr, a Canadian painter, produced this work during a period of intense focus on the Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Kitwancool depicts a monumental totem pole, a subject that occupied much of her artistic output during the late 1920s. Carr travelled to remote villages in British Columbia to document these structures, which were often weathered and abandoned at the time of her visits.

The composition centres on the carved wooden figure, rendered with a sculptural weight that emphasises the material quality of the cedar.
