Vasily Vereshchagin, a Russian painter known for his extensive travels through Central Asia, produced this work during his time in the Turkestan region. The painting captures a scene along the Chu River, featuring the traditional dwellings of the Kyrgyz people. The composition is dominated by the golden hues of the dry grass, which contrast with the cool, pale blue tones of the distant mountain range.

Vereshchagin focuses on the physical reality of the environment.
