Gole was a master of the mezzotint technique, a process that allows for subtle gradations of tone and soft transitions between light and shadow. By using a rocker to roughen the copper plate, he achieved the velvety blacks and soft greys visible in the cleric's robes and the surrounding circular frame. This tonal depth gives the figure a three-dimensional presence, drawing the viewer into the psychological space of the subject.

Below the circular portrait, the artist includes a French verse that clarifies the intent of the print. The text explicitly compares the Jesuit subject to the fox and the serpent, claiming that he possesses a level of craftiness equal to the devil.
