Description
A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting a lady and her two attendants in elegant Edo-period attire.
Torii Kiyonaga was a master of the Ukiyo-e school, particularly recognised for his contributions to the bijin-ga genre, which depicts beautiful women. This print belongs to the series Fuzoku azuma no nishiki, or Brocade Prints of Eastern Manners. The composition features three figures: a central lady accompanied by two attendants. Kiyonaga is noted for his tall, slender figures, a stylistic departure from the more rounded proportions favoured by his predecessors. The figures occupy a shallow, stage-like space, allowing the viewer to focus on the textures and patterns of their kimonos.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period woodblock printing process. The colour palette is balanced, utilising soft tones alongside the deep blue of the parasol. The artist employs thin, controlled lines to define the contours of the figures and the folds of their garments. The parasol provides a geometric contrast to the organic forms of the women, while the subtle floral patterns on the robes demonstrate the attention to detail common in Kiyonaga's work. The lack of a complex background ensures that the interaction between the three figures remains the primary subject. This work reflects the cultural interest in the fashion and daily lives of the urban population in Edo, capturing a moment of quiet movement. The print is an example of the refined aesthetic that defined the mid-1780s in Japan, where the focus shifted towards a more graceful and elongated representation of the human form.
