This landscape by Maximilien Luce showcases the Neo-Impressionist style through its use of pointillism. The painting depicts a river flowing through a town under a sky with beams of sunlight.
Maximilien Luce, a French Neo-Impressionist, painted this landscape with a river using small, distinct strokes of colour. This technique, known as pointillism, was developed by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac as a scientific approach to colour mixing. Luce adapted the method to his own style, often depicting industrial scenes and urban landscapes with a social-realist bent. In this particular work, the scene shows a river flowing through a town, with buildings and a church steeple visible in the distance. Sunlight breaks through the clouds, casting beams of light across the composition. The foreground is dominated by a field of green, rendered with a mosaic of brushstrokes. The river reflects the sky, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. The overall effect is one of tranquility, despite the presence of the town and its structures. Luce's use of colour and light creates a harmonious and visually engaging image.
