Bartolomeo Pinelli, a Roman artist known for his documentation of local customs and folk life, produced this etching depicting two pifferari. These itinerant musicians, often shepherds from the Abruzzo region, travelled to Rome during the Christmas season to perform traditional melodies. Pinelli captures them in their characteristic attire, including heavy cloaks and laced footwear, which were essential for their long journeys through the mountainous terrain.

The composition focuses on the musicians as they play their instruments: the zampogna (bagpipe) and the piffero (a type of shawm). Pinelli employs a clean, linear style that reflects his training in the Neoclassical tradition.
