Published by John Boydell in London, the project sought to reproduce the original sketches held in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire. Earlom employed a combination of etching and mezzotint to capture the tonal qualities of Claude's original wash drawings.

The composition depicts a pastoral scene with figures and cattle in the foreground, set against a backdrop of trees and distant architectural ruins.
