Giacomo Balla was a central figure in the Italian Futurist movement, a group obsessed with the mechanics of modernity, speed, and the dynamism of the early twentieth century. In this work, Balla moves away from representational depiction to capture the essence of movement itself. The composition is constructed from intersecting geometric planes, primarily triangles and curved arcs, which suggest the trajectory of an object in motion across a field of blue.

The palette is restricted to primary colours: a deep, saturated blue background against which sharp, angular forms in red and yellow collide. By layering these shapes, Balla creates a sense of temporal progression, as if the viewer is observing multiple stages of a single action simultaneously.
