This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai is a fine example of a surimono, a privately commissioned print often exchanged among members of poetry circles in Edo-period Japan. Shinsai, a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the texture of natural objects through the medium of the woodblock.

The composition features a spiny lobster resting atop a piece of charcoal, accompanied by sprigs of pine and other symbolic items associated with the Japanese New Year.
