This engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the personification of Magnanimitas, or magnanimity. The figure stands within a shallow, arched architectural niche, a common device in sixteenth-century printmaking to provide spatial depth. Beside her, a lion rests, serving as the traditional iconographic attribute for this virtue, representing strength, courage, and nobility of spirit.
