George Frederick Watts painted Mammon in 1885 as part of his series of allegorical works. The composition depicts the personification of greed, represented as a heavy, golden-clad figure seated upon a throne. The figure wears a crown of laurel leaves, yet his expression remains vacant and detached. His physical weight presses down upon two smaller, vulnerable figures who lie crushed beneath his robes. The scene serves as a critique of material obsession and the indifference of wealth toward human suffering.

Watts utilised a muted, earthy palette to ground the scene in a sombre reality. The contrast between the metallic sheen of the central figure's garments and the pale, fragile forms of the victims creates a clear visual hierarchy. The inclusion of skulls on the throne backrest provides a memento mori, reminding the viewer of the inevitable end that awaits even the most powerful.
