This engraving by Gérard Audran, dated 1693, depicts the final moments of Saint Agnes. In the lower register, Agnes is shown at the moment of her death by the sword, surrounded by soldiers and onlookers. Her posture is one of resignation, while the executioner stands over her. The scene is set within a classical architectural frame, providing a sense of order to the chaotic event.

Above the earthly scene, the clouds part to reveal a heavenly host. Angels play musical instruments, including a small organ and a harp, while others offer a palm branch and a crown to the saint. The dove of the Holy Spirit hovers at the very top, completing the theological narrative. Audran, a master of the burin, employs a range of hatching techniques to define the musculature of the figures, the texture of the drapery, and the atmospheric quality of the clouds. The contrast between the dark, grounded figures of the execution and the lighter, ethereal forms of the celestial realm is managed through precise line work.

The print includes a dedication at the base, addressed to Innocent Le Masson, the Minister General of the Carthusian Order. This inclusion identifies the work as a formal commission, intended for a scholarly or religious audience.
