This engraving, titled Maivs (May), is part of a series depicting the months of the year, executed by the Flemish master Aegidius Sadeler II. Working in Prague under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II, Sadeler produced works that combined technical precision with the complex allegorical themes common to the period. The composition presents a sophisticated garden scene, where figures in contemporary aristocratic dress engage in leisure activities, such as playing the harp and reading, beneath a covered loggia.

The background reveals a sprawling estate, complete with a formal garden, a fountain, and a distant castle overlooking a river. The sky features a celestial emblem, with two figures seated upon a cloud, representing the astrological sign associated with the month. The foreground is densely populated with figures, while the surrounding trees and architectural elements frame the view, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye toward the horizon.

Sadeler’s technique is characterised by fine, controlled lines that define both the textures of the foliage and the intricate folds of the subjects' clothing.
