Candido Portinari, a central figure in Brazilian modernism, produced this work during a period of intense focus on the national identity of his home country. Meio Ambiente, which translates to Environment, presents a stylised vision of the Brazilian flora and fauna. The composition is structured around a central tree trunk, which anchors the scene, while a large macaw sits to the left and a small monkey occupies the right, interacting with a cluster of bananas. The background reveals a distant coastal view, rendered with simplified forms that suggest the geography of the Brazilian littoral.

Portinari employs a flattened perspective that draws upon both European modernist techniques and a desire to depict the specific character of the tropics.
