Jacob van Strij, a painter from Dordrecht, produced this work during a period when Dutch artists looked back to the seventeenth-century masters for inspiration. The composition reflects the influence of Aelbert Cuyp, whose pastoral scenes of cattle and rural life defined the aesthetic of the region. Van Strij adopts a similar approach to light and atmosphere, using a soft, golden glow to unify the figures and the surrounding fields.

The background opens into a flat, expansive horizon, typical of the Dutch countryside, where the sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas.
